Land of Destruction
Chapter One:
A Glimpse of the Future
It was a hot and muggy day in late July, and the plants were wilting, the birds were silent. It hadn?t rained for at leased two weeks and even then it didn?t rain enough. Alexander lived in New York City where the heat was even more unbearable; were if you were not careful, you could die at any time and anywhere.
Alexander was following his usual path, he first went to work then he went to the sushi-bar and then he would go home. His first stop was work where he had an un-eventful day. Later in the afternoon he went to the sushi-bar across the street for a bite to eat. While he was inside, he met a friend that he hadn?t seen in years.
?Hello Marv?, said Alexander,? How have you been all these years??
?I?ve been great Alexander?, said Marvin, ? I got married and I now have two kids. Now I work as a stockbroker for Stock Ltd. in mid-town. And today, I was surprised to see you here at the sushi bar where I go during lunch break??
?So are they boys or girls?? said Alexander.
?Well, they?re both girls?, said Marvin,? one?s named Selene, and the other is named Jasmine.?
?So how old are they?? said Alexander.
?One?s 7 and the other is 9?, said Marvin,? So how have you been Alex?
?I?ve been ok Marv?, said Alexander,? I haven?t found a girl yet, so I don?t think I can have any children. I work as manager of the bank across the street. Today I was surprised to see you here too, because I come here after work everyday. Today I was a little early and I guess you were a little late.?
?I guess that?s so?, said Marvin and he looked at his watch,? Wow! Look at the time! It?s 6:00 already, and I must go home to my wife so I can make dinner and see my kids.?
Marvin got off his stool and left into the early night. After a few more drinks, Alexander decided it was time to leave as well. He left the bar and thought he might wander around the streets for a while because he didn?t need to be home yet.
Alexander took-off down the street to the bookstore to see if there was anything he could find to read later that night. He wandered through the rows of bookshelves. He went to the ?Historical Fantasy? section. Alexander found a book called What Really Happened by Joshua Theres. He took the book to the counter and paid ten dollars for the book?a great deal for a book of that size and popularity.
Alexander left the bookstore, and started for home to read his book and watch TV on his brand-new forty-inch plasma TV. At the end of the street he crossed the street and took a left. At the corner of the next street he heard someone?s radio playing The Show Must Go On by Queen. Suddenly a man tapped him on his shoulder.
?Come with me?, said the stranger.
?Who are you?, said Alexander, ?and why do you want me to come??
?I am a man?, said the stranger, ? who wishes for you to see something. I can show you the future, no, more than show you?bring you to the future and let you walk around as long as you want to get a feel for what the future will be like. I can only do this if you are willing.?
?I accept for you to show me the future?, said Alexander, thinking that this guy was nuts, but also feeling compelled to go with the man, as if he trusted him. To Alexander, the man seemed quite famillier.
?Ok.? said the stranger, ?Hold onto you hat or any loose personal belonging because you?re in for the ride of your life.?
Alexander took the man?s advice and held onto his briefcase so it wouldn?t get blown away. The stranger muttered that it was time to go, and suddenly, the world began to pitch and roll, like a sailor?s worst nightmare, and the sky became black and there was a flash in the distance, and then closer and closer until the flash overwhelmed them and Alexander saw a world that was barren, flat and uninhabited.
?What happened?? said Alexander.
?I cannot tell you.? Said the Stranger, ?Last time I was here was ten years ago and it did not look like this.?
?Where?, aid Alexander, ?are any people so that I may find out what happened.?
?I?m not sure?, said the Stranger, ?we can look around if you like, so we can find some people if there are any people.?
Alexander and the stranger wandered in a wasteland of the city he once knew. They passed his bank even though you couldn?t tell it was a bank. Then in the distance they saw a shelter, constructed out of the remains of the city. They walked to the shelter to see if there was a person inside. To their amazement they found a whole family stuffed in the small shelter. The family inside looked scared at the sight of the strangers.
?A-a-are you going to kill us strangers?? said the man who looked to be the father.
?No.? said Alexander comfortingly, ?We are not here to kill, we are here to learn what has happened in the past twenty years.
?Ok.? Said the Father shakily, ?I do not know too much, just the major?uh?points of it.
