When the pace of the game accelerate it becomes a little cumbersome (not to say that only some browser like Netscape 7 can do it but browser that are not good to use when it's time to create the new ship design) to rename the planets captured so it's nice when you can rely on those of the enemy.
At the beginning I use usually something rather weird to try to avoid similarities with those that will populate later the herd.

I use a very simple MS-number Mp-Anime neam until i run out hen i just use. Ms-number -Mpnumber e.g Mp50Mp3
usually i use names from mythology, but alphabetically.
so my first 5 planets (in the first system, rather) would be athineum 1-5, the next Bortovia 1-5 and so on. then should i get past the first 26 systems i start at A again.
it works for me.
incidentally, if someone comes up with a good name with Q, pm me or something...
You could just name them Q, that's from Star Trek.
Tell me that's not from mythology, I dare you!
Perhaps "common" mythology is older than the character Q.

its not mythology, its cult fiction... there you go :)

One way you could do it is with 'foreign' alphabets. For instance, Alpha 1, Beta 1... then when you finish that go on to another alphabet(ie Hebrew, Aleph, Beth, Gemmel...)

As I recall there was an Aztec God called Quetzlcoatl or similar.
yeah, but firstly, you should ideally be able to pronounce the bloody thing, and secondly it should ideally be a place. i think there was a similar charachter in the final fantasy series... but im not sure.
il probably settle for quebec... ;)

Almost: QuAtzEcoatle :p
the transcription of this name into latin letters will very probably differ from language to language...
it`s like russian names...
some write it Tschebyscheff... others Czebychev... or variatons of these... or something completely different... but it`s still the same person...
PS: my math professor once complained about the "constant lack of alphabets" when naming variables and functions... that was when he used up the latin alphabet, the greek alphabet, and the old german alphabet... and he started to use Hebrew letters... and we wondered when he would start using cyrillic and arabic letters :D
Eddi, so many characters? You must have learned very ugly formulas ;)

Mine I think is a confusing way of naming planets, I just get up with a theme and name all the planets after it, eg. Romana: planets are Apollo, Diana, etc... If the planet is class 5, for example, I'd name it Hades after hell since it looks desolate.
And what if you orbital terraform? :D
or loose some of your planets ;)
because you terraformed :D
or just get mixed up?
and then terraform some more for therapeutic reasons (or cos you're hooked)?

Well then you just have to count from 0-999;)
I personally use 2 letters+numer in system like
AA1 for my starting planet
Same here
ex:
*Lava AA - Lava AA-1/2/3/4/5
*Lava AB - Lava AB-1/2/3/4/5
...
*Lava BE - Lava BE-1/2/3/4/5
i usually call them RU ###-# (where # stands for any digit)
starting with 001... then in numeric order... except i fly through wormholes... then i usually start with 101, 201...
in most cases i leave the planets i captured the same name as they were... that makes it easier for me to remember their location, when they are in the news... (since there is no open in map there usually...)
The person i am most amazed with how much love he names his planets is Moclania. He names the star after a motto and all planets around to a specific thing for that motto.
Really nice, but it makes me thinking how much time he spent in naming his planets
0001A - 1st planet
systems named 0001-0999 etc
Dont name planets after settling really
